# Use Runway in WorkBuddy.

Runway Gen-4 generates 5-second or 10-second videos at 720p or 1080p from a text prompt or a first-frame image. WorkBuddy speaks MCP natively — add RunAPI as an MCP server once, then ask the workbench agent for a video. It calls the Runway tool, waits for the async task, and drops the finished video URL back into your chat. Extend clips or restyle footage with Runway Aleph the same way.

- [Get API Key](https://runapi.ai/login)
- [Read the docs](https://runapi.ai/docs/guides)

one MCP server · one RunAPI key · 720p or 1080p output

### Prompt

```text
Generate a video with Runway Gen-4 through the runapi MCP server.
Requirements:
- Use the runapi MCP server's video generation tool.
- Set model to "runway".
- Prompt: "A drone shot rising over a misty mountain lake at sunrise, cinematic lighting".
- Set duration_seconds to 10 and output_resolution to "1080p".
- The task is async — wait for it to complete and give me the video URL.
```

### MCP config

```bash
{
  "mcp_servers": {
    "runapi": {
      "url": "https://runapi.ai/mcp",
      "transport": "streamable_http",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer $RUNAPI_API_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

### Response

```json
{
  "task_id": "tsk_abc123",
  "status": "completed",
  "model": "runway",
  "output": {
    "video_url": "https://media.runapi.ai/videos/tsk_abc123.mp4"
  }
}
```

## Use Runway in WorkBuddy in three steps

1. **Add the RunAPI MCP server** - Register RunAPI as an MCP server named runapi pointing at https://runapi.ai/mcp, with the Authorization header reading your key from RUNAPI_API_KEY. If you already connected RunAPI to WorkBuddy, the same server exposes the Runway tools — no extra setup needed. `{
  "mcp_servers": {
    "runapi": {
      "url": "https://runapi.ai/mcp",
      "transport": "streamable_http",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer $RUNAPI_API_KEY" }
    }
  }
}
`
2. **Prompt the workbench agent** - Ask WorkBuddy for a Runway video in plain language — describe the scene, pick 5 or 10 seconds, and choose 720p or 1080p. The agent maps your request onto the Runway tool exposed by the runapi MCP server, including first_frame_image_url if you attach a reference image. `Generate a 10-second 1080p video with Runway Gen-4:
a drone shot rising over a misty mountain lake at sunrise.
`
3. **Receive the video URL** - The Runway task is asynchronous. WorkBuddy polls it through the MCP server until the status is completed, then posts the output video URL into your conversation. To extend the clip, ask the agent to call extend_video with the source_task_id. `{
  "task_id": "tsk_abc123",
  "status": "completed",
  "output": { "video_url": "https://media.runapi.ai/videos/tsk_abc123.mp4" }
}
`

## Runway tool parameters

| Parameter | Type | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `model` | `string` | Required. Use runway for Gen-4, or runway-aleph for Aleph edit_video. |
| `prompt` | `string` | Required. Text description of the video content — camera motion, scene, lighting. |
| `duration_seconds` | `integer` | Required. Video length: 5 or 10 seconds. |
| `output_resolution` | `string` | Required. Output resolution: 720p or 1080p. Affects pricing. |
| `first_frame_image_url` | `string` | Optional. URL of an image to use as the first frame of the video. |
| `aspect_ratio` | `string` | Optional. Output aspect ratio: 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, or 3:4. |

## What is Runway on WorkBuddy?

Runway Gen-4 is known for quick, clean, cinematic output with smooth motion and strong prompt adherence. It generates 5 or 10 second clips at 720p or 1080p from text prompts or reference images, with world consistency that keeps characters and environments stable within a shot. WorkBuddy reaches it through the runapi MCP server — the same server and RUNAPI_API_KEY that power every other model in the workbench.

## Runway use cases

- **Intros and B-rolls for creators** - Ask WorkBuddy for polished intro sequences and B-roll footage for YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok content. Runway's cinematic framing produces broadcast-quality clips from a plain-language brief.
- **Micro-ads and short reels** - Create 5-second or 10-second ad clips and promotional reels from the workbench. Attach a product image as the first frame and Runway animates it with camera movement and natural lighting.
- **Filmmaking pre-visualization** - Generate concept clips for narrative-driven content with consistent characters. Use reference images to lock down character appearance across multiple shots before committing to production.

## Runway + WorkBuddy questions

### Can I use Runway video generation in WorkBuddy?

Yes. Add RunAPI as an MCP server with your RUNAPI_API_KEY, and the Runway tools appear alongside every other RunAPI model. Ask the workbench agent for a video with a prompt, duration (5 or 10 seconds), and resolution (720p or 1080p), and it handles the call for you.

### What is the difference between Runway Gen-4 and Runway Aleph?

Runway Gen-4 (model: runway) handles text_to_video and extend_video — creating new clips from text or images. Runway Aleph (model: runway-aleph) handles edit_video — restyling existing footage with a text prompt. Both are exposed by the same runapi MCP server, so WorkBuddy can switch between them per request.

### How does Runway pricing work on RunAPI?

Runway uses matrix billing based on duration_seconds and output_resolution. A 5-second 720p clip costs less than a 10-second 1080p clip. Check the RunAPI pricing page for current rates. Pay-per-use, no subscription required.

### Does WorkBuddy wait for the video, or do I poll myself?

The workbench agent handles it. Runway tasks are asynchronous — the tool returns a task_id, and WorkBuddy polls the task through the MCP server until the status is completed, then posts the video URL into your conversation. You never manage the polling loop yourself.

### Can I extend a Runway video after generating it?

Yes. Ask WorkBuddy to extend the clip — the agent calls extend_video with the source_task_id from the original generation and your new prompt. The extension appends to the existing clip, with per-clip pricing based on output_resolution.
